A detailed resin model can survive months on a display shelf and still break during its first international shipment. The difference is that shipping subjects the model to repeated vibration, impacts, stacking pressure and handling from multiple directions.
Mirrors, spoilers, antennas, suspension parts and thin resin panels are especially vulnerable because they can receive force long before the main body of the model moves.
Good packaging therefore does more than surround the model with soft material. It controls how impact forces reach the model.
Think in Protective Layers
This layered approach is particularly useful for international shipments because parcels may pass through several sorting facilities, vehicles and aircraft before reaching the collector.
Start With a Fragility Map of the Model
Before touching the packaging materials, inspect the model as if you were trying to predict where it would break.

If a component is intentionally removable, removing and packing it separately may sometimes be safer than asking a thin resin joint to survive the trip. Only do this where the model was designed for disassembly and the part can be reinstalled without damage.
Immobilize the Strong Parts, Not the Fragile Parts
The body or a purpose-built display base should carry the restraint forces whenever possible.
Do not solve movement by compressing bubble wrap tightly around mirrors, wing endplates or antennas. Soft material can still apply damaging force when it is packed under compression.
Three protection zones
Use a Strong Inner Box
The inner package should contain the fully restrained model and prevent it from contacting the walls during normal handling.
DHL’s current international packaging guidance recommends keeping shipped items centrally positioned with at least approximately 6 cm of protective space from the outside walls and corners of the shipping box.
For a fragile resin model, however, that cushioning should not simply be loose material surrounding an unrestrained car. The model itself should first be stabilized.
After packing the inner box, gently move it in different directions. The contents should not slide, knock or change position.
Build the package so it can tolerate ordinary transportation handling even if the orientation changes during the journey.
Double-Box Valuable or Highly Detailed Models
Both DHL and UPS currently recommend a box-in-box or two-box method for fragile goods.
The idea is to create a second impact zone around the protected inner carton.
- Finish packing and immobilizing the model inside the inner box.
- Choose a larger, rigid corrugated outer carton.
- Place cushioning beneath the inner carton.
- Center the inner carton so it cannot touch the outer walls.
- Fill the sides and top with protective material.
- Confirm that the inner box cannot move before sealing.
DHL’s July 2026 international packing guidance recommends approximately 6 cm of protective material around the inner box and says its outer box should be substantially larger than the inner carton for this method.
UPS likewise currently recommends double-boxing fragile goods and specifies additional cushioning between the two cartons.
Those carrier specifications are useful reference points, but always check the requirements of the carrier actually handling your shipment.
Do Not Allow Multiple Models to Touch
If two resin models are shipped in one carton, each should have its own protected position.
DHL and UPS both recommend wrapping individual items separately and using dividers or cushioning to prevent items from colliding.
This matters because a second model effectively becomes a hard moving object inside the box if it breaks free.
Photograph the Packing Process
Before closing the package, photograph:
- the finished model from several angles;
- fragile details before packing;
- how the model is restrained;
- the inner box before closing;
- the cushioning between the inner and outer boxes;
- the final sealed package and shipping label.
These photographs provide a record of the model’s condition and the packaging used. They can also help you improve your packing method if similar parts repeatedly arrive damaged.
Describe the Contents Precisely for Customs
International shipping adds another requirement that domestic packages may not have: customs documentation.
The exact form and data required depend on the origin, destination, carrier, shipment type and value. However, vague descriptions are increasingly problematic.
As one current example, USPS now requires detailed descriptions for international packages sent through its network, explaining that the declaration should identify what the item is, what it is made from and its purpose.
Declare the shipment accurately. Do not label a commercial sale as a gift simply to attempt to avoid import duties or taxes.
Check Import Rules Before Accepting the Order
A carrier accepting a parcel does not guarantee that the destination country will allow the goods to enter without documentation, duties or other requirements.
Before shipping, check the destination country’s current import rules and your carrier’s customs requirements. The purchaser may also be responsible for taxes or import charges depending on the transaction and destination.
If you sell internationally through a marketplace, also check how that marketplace handles VAT, sales tax, duties or customs data for the destination.
Do Not Add Resin, Solvent or Paint Samples Without Checking Their Shipping Status
A finished, cured display model is a very different shipment from a package that also contains bottles of liquid photopolymer resin, isopropyl alcohol, paint, aerosol cans, adhesives or other chemicals.
Some chemical products can fall under dangerous-goods transportation rules. DHL’s current international dangerous-goods guidance specifically identifies solvents and other chemical products among items that may require specialized classification, packaging, labeling and documentation.
Check the product Safety Data Sheet and the carrier’s current dangerous-goods rules before adding resin, solvent, paint, aerosol or similar materials to an international parcel.
If the order is for a finished model, the simplest shipping configuration is often to ship only the finished item and its ordinary non-regulated accessories rather than adding workshop chemicals.
Run a Movement Test Before Sealing
You do not need to intentionally drop a customer’s finished model to evaluate the package.
Instead, before final sealing, carefully move the packed carton through several orientations. Listen and feel for internal movement.
If you can hear the inner carton sliding, the outer cushioning is incomplete. If you can hear the model moving inside the inner carton, fix the restraint system before adding more outer packaging.
Those are two different problems and should be corrected at the appropriate layer.
Packaging Should Be Repeatable
If you regularly ship custom resin cars, document the packaging configuration that works.
Record inner-box size, outer-box size, cushioning method and special protection used for recurring model types. This turns packaging from improvisation into part of the production workflow.
Immobilize the strong parts of the model, preserve clearance around delicate features, use a protected inner carton, create an outer impact zone for valuable models, and complete customs documentation accurately before the shipment enters the international network.
