A resin part that uses $4 worth of material is not necessarily a $6 product.

Someone had to prepare the file or mold, print or cast the part, clean it, inspect it, remove supports or flash, replace failed pieces, package the finished item and pay the marketplace or payment processor that handles the sale.

A useful pricing system captures those costs before deciding what the collector should pay.

Price from the complete production process, not from resin consumption alone.
Material is often one of the easiest costs to measure and one of the easiest costs to overemphasize.

Build the Cost Stack First

Material Cost Is More Than the Resin Inside the Finished Part

For a printed accessory, begin with the amount of resin actually consumed by the job, including supports and other unavoidable printed material.

For cast parts, the calculation may also include mold material, release products, mixing containers and the expected life of the mold.

If a silicone mold costs $36 to produce and you reasonably expect 30 acceptable casting cycles from it, allocating approximately $1.20 of mold cost to each successful unit gives a more realistic starting point than treating the mold as free after the first casting.

Do not use an optimistic mold-life assumption simply to make the product appear profitable. Use your actual production records once enough batches have been completed.

Put a Value on Hands-On Time

Machine time and labor time are not the same thing.

A six-hour print does not necessarily mean six hours of labor if the machine runs unattended. But preparing a file, setting supports, cleaning a print, sanding support marks, checking fit and packaging the part all consume human time.

If your target labor rate is $20 per hour and a part requires 30 minutes of actual hands-on work, that portion of the cost stack is $10 before materials, overhead or selling fees are considered.

Add a Rework Allowance Instead of Pretending Every Part Succeeds

Small-scale resin production rarely has a perfect yield forever.

A print can fail. A thin casting can trap a bubble. A part can warp during curing. A painted component can be rejected during final inspection.

If production records show that a product regularly requires additional material or rework, pricing only the successful unit understates what it actually costs to produce sellable inventory.

You can represent this as a small percentage added to the production cost. The correct value should come from your own yield data, not from an arbitrary industry percentage.

Margin and Markup Are Not the Same Thing

This distinction is important when a seller says, “I want 25% profit.”

If a part costs $30 and you simply add 25% to the cost, the price becomes $37.50. That is a 25% markup, but the resulting gross margin is only 20% of the selling price before additional selling fees.

The calculator above works backward from the desired margin and estimated percentage-based selling costs, which is usually more useful when establishing a minimum viable selling price.

Marketplace Fees Can Change the Price More Than Resin Cost

Selling fees should be checked before the listing goes live rather than guessed from memory.

For example, Etsy currently charges a $0.20 listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount. Etsy Payments processing is an additional percentage plus fixed amount, and its rate varies according to the seller’s bank-account country.

eBay uses a different structure. Its current U.S. seller documentation says final value fees depend on category and are generally calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale plus a per-order fee. eBay also states that sellers do not separately pay a third-party payment-processing fee for those transactions.

Those differences are exactly why the calculator does not permanently hard-code an “Etsy fee” or “eBay fee.” Enter the current figures for your account instead.

One-Off Custom Parts Need a Different Price Than Repeatable Production

CAD changes, measurements, test fitting and setup may exist only for one customer’s project. Most of that development time belongs to that order.

Development and mold-making costs can be distributed across multiple expected units, provided your sales forecast and usable mold life are realistic.

This distinction can dramatically change pricing.

Suppose a wheel conversion requires three hours of CAD work. If it is a unique commission, those hours may be part of the project cost. If the same design will become a product sold repeatedly, you may instead allocate development cost across an expected production run.

Do not allocate development across hundreds of theoretical sales when you have no reason to expect that volume. The pricing model should become more accurate as real sales data accumulates.

Collectors Are Not Buying Resin by Weight

A small, difficult component can justifiably cost more than a physically larger simple part.

Collector value can be influenced by factors such as:

  • fit and dimensional accuracy;
  • surface quality;
  • difficulty of the original design work;
  • number of separate components;
  • cleanup required before painting;
  • whether hardware or inserts are included;
  • how easily the part integrates with a specific kit;
  • production volume and replacement rate.

This does not mean adding an arbitrary “collector premium.” It means the selling price does not need to follow resin volume when the majority of value comes from design and workmanship.

Do Not Hide Bad Pricing Behind Shipping

Decide whether packaging and postage are included in the listed price or charged separately, then model the fees accordingly.

This matters because marketplaces can assess percentage-based selling fees on shipping charges as well as the item price.

Etsy currently applies its transaction fee to the order total including shipping when shipping is charged to the customer. eBay likewise explains that its final value fee calculation can include shipping and other applicable components of the total sale.

Therefore, “buyer pays shipping” does not necessarily mean shipping has no effect on marketplace fees.

Review the Price After Real Orders

A pricing model should improve with production history.

After several orders, compare your assumptions with what actually happened. Did cleanup take 15 minutes or 40? Did the mold last 30 casts or 14? Did one design generate substantially more rejected pieces than another?

Update the model using those observations.

If a part consistently requires much more labor than expected, the solution may be to increase the price, redesign the production process or discontinue the item. Selling more units of an underpriced product simply produces more underpriced work.

A useful price is one you can explain from the production process.
Measure material, record hands-on labor, allocate realistic overhead and development costs, account for rejected parts, enter the marketplace’s current fees and then decide what margin makes the product worth continuing to produce.
